How to prepare for buying a purebred French bulldog?  🐾

  1. Get to know the breed before making a decision: e.g., read the FCI breed standard, visit a dog show in your area (link to the 2025 polish show calendar), which will help you see what a dog of this breed should look like and what character/temperament the breed has, talk to owners and breeders of dogs of this breed.

  2. Take into account the fact that a bulldog will require your time, commitment, love, attention, and financial investment. Think carefully about buying a dog and whether you are able to maintain it and provide it with the necessary physical and mental conditions. Consider what you will do with the dog in different life situations, e.g., during vacations or while you are at work.

  3. Find a breeder registered with the ZKwP/FCI. You can check the breeder's affiliation on the ZKwP branch and FCI websites.

  4. Get to know the breeder you have chosen. Just like you, they also want to make sure that their puppy goes to a wonderful, loving, and responsible home.

  5. Before buying, make sure that the puppy will be vaccinated according to its age, dewormed, microchipped, and will have a ZKwP certificate, which is the basis for obtaining a pedigree. You should also receive a dog health book confirming the vaccinations and deworming.

  6. Prepare yourself, your family, and your home for the arrival of your puppy:

-Read books or articles from reliable sources about dog psychology, communicating with dogs, communication between dogs, and caring for and maintaining the hygiene of French Bulldogs.

-If you have children, talk to them about the new family member and explain how to care for it and what their responsibilities will be.

-If you have other pets, such as dogs or cats, make sure that the introduction of the new family member is comfortable and safe for them and for the puppy.

-Think about a feeding and training plan for the puppy.

-Find a veterinarian who is competent to provide veterinary care for your dog. Plan a schedule of necessary vaccinations for your dog with your veterinarian.

-Remember that during the first few months, puppies explore the world and their surroundings empirically and with curiosity. Therefore, ensure maximum safety by removing any objects from your home that could be dangerous to them (e.g. isolate access to cables, remove small items that they could eat or choke on, provide a safe and stable space for them to play, and toys that are the right size and made of safe materials).

-Prepare everything your puppy needs in advance: a bed of the right size, bowls, mats for further potty training, a collar and a leash of the right length, safe toys suitable for the dog's age and weight, and accessories for grooming and maintaining your puppy's hygiene.

-Before picking up your puppy, prepare your car to ensure maximum safety. It is worth knowing that polish law also requires animals to be secured during transport. Therefore, prepare a suitably large carrier (kennel cage).

How to care for your French Bulldog during hot weather? ☀️

🌡️ During the summer season, when the ambient temperature rises, special attention should be paid to ensuring the comfort and safety of our four-legged friends. This applies to all animals and all dog breeds, but the specific characteristics of each breed should also be taken into account. Dogs with long and short coats, large and small dogs, and dogs with different muzzle lengths have slightly different requirements.

What should you keep in mind?

  • High temperatures outside, but also inside your apartment or house, can be dangerous for your dog. On sunny and hot days, you should walk your dog early in the morning and later in the evening, when the temperature is slightly lower and the position of the sun guarantees shade. During the day, toilet breaks should be limited to quickly doing their business and returning home. It is always a good idea to have a bottle of water with you.

  • What we often forget is the temperature of the ground. Concrete and paving stones heat up throughout the day and are much hotter than the air. We often forget that we humans have shoes, while dogs' paws are exposed to burns and pain.

  • The interior of an apartment or house also heats up. We should ensure adequate ventilation and maintain a safe temperature. Fans or air conditioning are helpful, but we should not direct the airflow at the dog, as this can lead to inflammation of the upper respiratory tract (colds) in dogs. Cooling mats are useful, but remember to use them under supervision so that your dog does not chew or scratch the covering and swallow the cooling gel inside the mat.

  • Never leave your dog alone in a car or other small, unventilated space. This can quickly lead to heatstroke and even death.

  • Dogs cool themselves differently than humans. They do not have a developed system of sweat glands throughout their bodies. They mainly have them on the pads of their paws. The main mechanism for lowering a dog's body temperature is panting (gasping). The rapid flow of air through the mouth and throat causes water to evaporate from the mucous membranes of the tongue, palate, and respiratory tract, allowing heat to be released to the outside. In addition, dogs release heat through sweat glands on their paws and through dilated blood vessels close to the skin's surface.

🆘 How to properly cool down an overheated dog? 🆘

❗Never cause a sudden change in temperature by pouring cold water on your dog (risk of thermal shock)! Cool your dog down carefully and gently. It is recommended to move your dog to a cooler, quiet place where it can rest and give it fresh water to drink (but NOT ICE COLD water). You can use wet and cool towels to wipe the dog's body. Providing the dog with a cooling mat or a wet towel placed on the ground can also be very helpful. The dog will be able to lie down on them if it wants to.

Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs:

  • excessive, very rapid panting

  • apathy, weakness, confusion, anxiety

  • unsteady gait, balance/coordination disorders

  • excessive salivation

  • vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • bluish discoloration (e.g., blue tongue)

  • convulsions

  • loss of consciousness

  • high body temperature (above 40 degrees)

  • congested or pale mucous membranes

  • shortness of breath

  • rapid heartbeat

🚨If your dog experiences any of the above symptoms, cool them down as quickly as possible and take them to the vet immediately!🚨

Why is it important to clean up 💩 after your dog?

  1. HEALTH of both humans and other animals: Dog feces may contain parasites or bacteria that can infect other animals and humans. For this reason, we should also remember to clean up after our dogs when walking in the woods. Feces left behind are a breeding ground for bacteria and larvae, and forest animals may eat them while feeding or drinking water from puddles.

  2. ECOLOGY: Dog feces are more of a pollutant than a benefit to the environment. They are not, as is often mistakenly assumed, a natural fertilizer for plants. Their chemical composition differs from that of, for example, the natural feces of wild herbivores, which means that they can, for example, acidify the soil and disturb its biological balance.

  3. PERSONAL CULTURE: Dog feces are neither pleasant to look at nor smell, and unfortunately, they can also be an unpleasant surprise for our shoes or dog paws. It is also often a cause of neighborly disputes. Let's remember to treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves and take care of the good image of dog owners.

  4. LAW: The obligation to clean up dog feces is often regulated by law. Most large cities and municipalities in Poland impose this obligation on dog owners, and failure to comply can result in a fine of up to PLN 500.

In summary, cleaning up after your dog is very important. It prevents the spread of disease, helps protect the environment, and promotes positive neighborly relations and a generally social attitude toward dog owners.
